Suit Filed Against Kaufman County for Jail Suicide
The family of Chauncey Elmer Toombs III has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Kaufman County after the 51-year-old died by suicide in the county jail just hours after being booked in April 2022. Despite being placed on suicide watch, Toombs was left with medical gauze strong enough to be used as a ligature and was not adequately monitored, according to the lawsuit. His death has raised serious questions about jail suicide prevention policies and oversight.
