32-Year-Old Kaufman County Jail Detainee Dies

The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, in Texas, filed a report regarding the custodial death of Jonathan Taylor Ngumbi.  Mr. Ngumbi was only 32 years old at the time of his death.  We provide information we obtained from that report, and we make no allegation of any wrongdoing against anyone.

The summary portion of the report reads in its entirety:

“On November 1, 2023, at 22:20, Inmate Jonathan Ngumbi was found on the floor of his single cell unconscious and unresponsive. Medical was notified and resuscitation attempts began by medical staff and detention personnel. The inmate was transported to the local hospital and once stabilized Care Flighted to Dallas Presbyterian Hospital. Once the inmate was admitted to the hospital in Dallas on November 2, 2023, testing began to determine the extent of the inmate’s medical condition. It was determined by the medical staff that there was no brain activity and was placed on life support until the inmate’s family could arrive and make further treatment decisions. The inmate’s family decided to donate Jonathan Ngumbi’s organs, and the harvesting of the organs began at approximately 10:00 p.m. on November 2, 2023.”

The report also mentions that Mr. Ngumbi did not exhibit any medical problems but provides no information as to why he was unresponsive.
