Jail Inmates Die from Unknown and Disputed Causes
U.S. citizens are often arrested and placed in local jails, and before their case has been adjudicated, they end up dying in the jail’s custody. The top three causes of death are suicide, various medical conditions, and withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. The death of inmates due to natural causes often becomes controversial because conditions such as sepsis and ketoacidosis both tend to suggest that the deceased was denied basic medical care—both are easily treated, whether with antibiotics or insulin, respectively.
The following are examples of jail inmate deaths by natural causes connected to possible neglect:
- Avery Borkovec was arrested and placed in the Broomfield County Detention Center in Broomfield, Colorado. He was moved to Boulder County Jail, where he died at 22 on November 3, 2022. An autopsy revealed that the cause of Mr. Borkovec’s death was sepsis due to a bacterial infection. The family has raised questions about possible medical neglect, suggesting that the jail staff was aware that the deceased had an infection. Boulder County Jail’s address is 3200 Airport Rd, Boulder, CO 80301.
- Twenty-nine-year-old Erik Carlson died on January 25, 2025, fewer than seven days after being transferred from Harris County Jail in Houston to a jail in LaSalle Parish in Louisiana. Mr. Carlson was transported by ambulance from the privately owned Louisiana jail to Rapides Emergency Room in Olla. At the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest. The hospital staff said that the heart attack was likely caused by sepsis, which had developed around his tonsils.
- Thirty-three-year-old Brandon Baker died after a week of incarceration in Madison County Detention Center in Kentucky. Immediately prior to his death, Mr. Baker was diagnosed with sepsis, infectious endocarditis, and renal failure, along with other conditions. The medical examiner ruled that medical neglect contributed to Mr. Baker’s tragic death. The address of Madison County Detention Center is 107 W Irvine St, Richmond, KY 40475.
- Monterey County Jail has been under scrutiny in recent times over allegations of inadequate medical care. The address of Monterey County Jail is 1414 Natividad Road. Salinas, CA 93906. Deaths at the jail included the following:
- On November 12, 2022, 29-year-old David Sands died after incarceration in Monterey County Jail. Mr. Sands, a diagnosed schizophrenic, was in his cell and drank water excessively over a period of time, resulting in his death from water intoxication. This type of behavior is known to occur with individuals suffering from schizophrenia.
- When 39-year-old Jimmy Hall died at Monterey County Jail in April 2023, it was determined that the jail’s failure to place him on a CPAP machine contributed to his death. Due to traces of fentanyl in his bloodstream, it has been suggested that the jail staff also failed to provide Mr. Hall with life-saving Narcan.
