47-year-old Jeff Colburn Dies a Day After being Booked into McLennan County Jail in Waco, Texas, on Monday, April 30, 2018, 47-year-old Jeff Colburn was transported from McLennan County jail in Waco, Texas, to the emergency room of a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Colburn had been arrested the night before, and deputies with the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office reported questionable activities. Colburn had been in a vehicle pulled over at about 7:25 p.m. because the driver was allegedly speeding. One of the officers said he smelled marijuana inside the vehicle, which had three occupants. No illegal substances were found in an initial search of the vehicle. Colburn, however, allegedly handed an officer a container with a green leafy substance inside. As Colburn was directed by deputies to move to the front of the vehicle, police say he reached into his shorts pockets while moving away from the officers and then allegedly ingested a green substance. Deputies attempted to recover the substance but were unable to.

Police took Colburn directly to the emergency room, where authorities say he was released by the hospital after refusing treatment. By 8:40 p.m., he was transported to the McLennan County Jail, according to authorities.

Colburn reported that he was feeling ill early on Monday morning. Jail nurses called emergency medical services to take the prisoner back to the hospital. He was transported there and later died, authorities said.

The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office and the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an internal investigation. Robinson Police Chief Phillip Prasifka said the custodial death will be investigated by his agency, as well. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards is another investigating agency that will scrutinize the prisoner death.

A jail administrator, Capt. Ricky Armstrong, said that early in the investigation, he believes evidence shows the jail responded appropriately to the medical emergency.

An autopsy will be done, so that the exact cause of the custodial death can be identified.
