On November 17, 2021, Daniel Ray Monroy was booked into Grayson County Jail located at 200 S. Crocket Street in Sherman, Texas. Mr. Monroy was seen hanging by his neck in his single cell on February 9, 2022. Jailers cut the ligature using a cut down tool, and measures were taken to save his life. Tragically, Mr. Monroy died on February 10, 2022.

February 2022 Texas County Jail Custodial Deaths Continued

Note: Since this series began, another February 2022 inmate death has been made known through the filing of a custodial death report.

On February 10, Simon Peter Douglas died within 3 hours of his booking into Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas. In that brief time, Mr. Douglas first tried killing himself with a ligature. He was then moved to a padded cell, where he repeatedly struck his head against the hardest surfaces there, resulting in his death.

On February 11, Gilbert Shaw Medina died after hanging himself in his single cell. He had been booked into Collin County Jail in McKinney, Texas, on December 8, 2021. It is indicated in the custodial death report filed by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office that Mr. Medina made suicidal statements during the time of his incarceration.
