6th Known Feb. 2022 Custodial Death Occurs in a TX County Jail-Pt5
Daniel Ray Monroy died at Grayson County Jail at the age of 29. On the afternoon before his death, he was discovered hanging in the separation cell he was housed in. Mr. Monroy had fashioned a ligature out of what appeared to be part of a bedsheet, but it later was found to have been torn from a mattress cover. Life-saving measures began as quickly as possible, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on February 10, 2022
February 2022 Texas County Jail Custodial Deaths Continued
Torry Lamont Newman
Torry Lamont Newman also died in February 2022 in the custody of a Texas county jail. He was 46 years old and housed in a detox cell, having entered Smith County Jail in Tyler, Texas, on January 27, 2022. Mr. Newman’s death occurred in the jail’s booking center. The custodial death report indicates that he had not been under restraint. He was discovered by an officer who was conducting face-to-face observations. Mr. Newman did not appear to be breathing, and nurses were called in a “Code Blue” over the radio. Upon their arrival, the nursing staff began chest compressions. Emergency medical services (EMS) were called, and they took over CPR attempts. About 45 minutes after life-saving measures began, EMS called for the end of the effort. Mr. Newman was pronounced dead at 5:11 am on February 18, 2022.
