A 16-year-old is Allegedly Shot and Killed by a Deputy in a Columbus, Ohio, Juvenile Courtroom
On January 17, 2018, 16-year-old Joseph Haynes was allegedly shot and killed by a deputy in a Columbus, Ohio, courtroom. There has already been a great deal of controversy over this alleged fatal police shooting, including reports of conflicting stories regarding what happened, between the police version and what Haynes’ family members are saying. Franklin County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Chief Deputy Rick Minerd confirmed that the teen was fatally shot at some point during a juvenile courtroom hearing. According to news sources, some of the teen’s family members got into an altercation with the deputy, who was the only law enforcement officer present in the courtroom at that time. The deputy was allegedly knocked to the ground at some point, and he allegedly fired one gunshot, which struck Haynes in the stomach. The 16-year-old was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The deputy suffered unspecified, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a different hospital for treatment.
The teen’s grandmother, Geraldine Haynes, told reporters what happened in the courtroom. She said that the deputy allegedly was trying to escort Haynes’ mother from the courtroom and in doing so, he pushed her against the wall. She said at that point, Haynes grabbed the deputy on the shoulder and they both ended up on the floor, after which the gun went off. According to Minerd, after the deputy was knocked to the ground, he suffered abrasions, bruises, and a black eye.
FCSO Detective Steven Tucker announced that the officer involved has received several death threats, and his identity is being withheld for security purposes.
The incident leading to Haynes’ death is under investigation.
