A 21-Year-Old Inmate at Cherokee County Jail Dies-Pt. 2
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department filed a report about the February 21, 2023, death of 21-one-year-old Aiydasani Mahogany Bryant on March 27, 2023. The custodial death report (CDR) indicates that Ms. Bryant did not receive medical care for the condition she died of. However, she was in a medical cell at Cherokee County Jail when she collapsed.
Cherokee County Jail was Found Noncompliant in October 2020
Cherokee County Jail failed the 2020 jail inspection, and the report shows that he violated three different requirements under the rule pertaining to the Objective Classification Plan.
Rule §271.1A(11)
The status of inmates placed in administrative separation shall be reviewed and documented at least every 30 days for continuance of status.
- Assessments made for inmate Amber Barrett, who is housed in administrative separation, exceeded the 30-day required reassessment by 1 to 6 days.
Rule §271.1B(2)
Initial Custody Assessment. The initial custody assessment is to be completed on all newly admitted inmates prior to housing assignments to determine custody levels.
- The initial assessment for inmate William Solis was not completed but showed an assessment of 6 minimum. Staff was advised to complete a classification assessment for inmate Solis and upon completion, the inmate was assessed as 3 medium.
Rule §271.1B(3)
A custody reassessment shall be conducted within 30 to 90 days of the Initial Custody Assessment and immediately upon any disciplinary action and/or change in legal status.
- Jail staff, on a consistent basis, are exceeding the 30-90 day required reassessment time frame by 1 to 5 days.
