A 21-Year-Old Inmate at Cherokee County Jail Dies-Pt. 5
Aiydasani Mahogany Bryant was only 21 years old when she died in the custody of Cherokee County Jail on February 21, 2023. She was booked into the jail on February 15, 2023. The custodial death report (CDR) shows that Ms. Bryant did not receive treatment for the medical condition that caused her death after being admitted to the jail’s jurisdiction. The medical cause of death is listed as “bilateral pulmonary thromboemboli.”
Three Jails Fail to Provide Training for Staff Responsible for Classification
Archer County Jail, Young County Jail, and Marion County Jail have been in violation of the same classification standard in recent times.
Archer County Jail located in Archer City, Texas, was cited in a jail inspection report dated March 15, 2021, for violation of Rule §271.3-Training.
Young County Jail in Graham, Texas, was cited on March 16, 2021, for non-compliance with the same standard.
Marion County Jail in Jefferson, Texas, was cited in a December 18, 2020, jail inspection report regarding classification training, as well.
Each of the three jails had the same basic note, as follows:
- Staff who have not completed the required four hours of classification training are performing classification duties.
Cooke County Jail is Found in Violation of a Classification Standard
Cooke County Jail was cited for noncompliance with Rule §271.1(a)(4) in a jail inspection report dated May 19, 2021. The rule states that minimum and maximum custody level inmates shall be housed separately. All other custody-level inmates should be housed separately.
- During the review of classification records, minimum and maximum custody level inmates were found to be housed together due to errors in the classification process.
