A 2nd Alleged Fatal Police Shooting in Two Weeks Occurs in North Texas on January 22, 2018
Early today, January 22, 2018, a man was killed in Irving, Texas, in an alleged police shooting. The shooting victim has not yet been identified. According to the Irving Police Department, at about 1:00 a.m., officers were called to an apartment complex regarding a man seen breaking into an automobile. When officers arrived at the scene, in the 3200 block of Finley Road, the suspect allegedly got into a pickup truck and used it to ram several vehicles, including a police car, while trying to flee the scene. According to Officer James McLellan, in a press release, one of the police officers feared for his life and discharged his duty weapon, allegedly striking the suspect one or more times. The man was quickly transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where he was later pronounced dead. Relatives need to be notified before the name of the suspect is released.
This is the second alleged fatal police shooting in North Texas in two weeks. On Tuesday, January 16, officers with the Bedford Police Department responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle in a grocery store parking lot. The suspect drove off when police arrived, but the officers went in pursuit. The vehicle was located on Hurst Drive. Officers said the suspect was allegedly reaching for a weapon as they were attempting to establish communication with him, and one officer allegedly shot the suspect, who died at the scene.
The Texas Rangers are investigating both of these deadly alleged police shootings. The shooter’s actions will be scrutinized, to try to determine whether or not excessive force was used, in which case there could be criminal charges and/or disciplinary actions.
