A 30-Year-Old Inmate in Travis County Jail Commits Suicide~Pt.5
The custodial death report (CDR) for Andres Alberto Villarreal-Salguero provides information obtained during intake at Travis County Jail. The answer was “yes” to each of the following questions. Did the decedent make suicidal statements? Did he exhibit any mental health problems? Did he exhibit any medical problems? Many jails have suicide prevention protocols that provide 15-minute checks on inmates who have indicated that they are suicidal. Andres Alberto Villarreal-Salguero took his own life by hanging himself in the jail on September 27, 2022.
Freestone County Jail is Cited for Noncompliance in a June 21-23, 2022, Jail Inspection Report
Rule §271.3~Training. In the chapter on the Classification and Separation of Inmates, Freestone County Jail was allegedly noncompliant with the rule on training. The address of Freestone County Jail is 103 Keechi Street, Fairfield, TX 75840. Rule §271.3 states that members of the jail staff whose duties include classification shall be provided with at least four hours of training on the principles, procedures, and instruments for classification assessments, housing assignments, reassessments, and inmate needs.
- The inspector with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards who conducted the jail inspection noted that members of the jail staff who have not completed the required four hours of classification training are performing classification duties.
The classification of inmates serves many important functions. It helps to ensure a safe and secure facility. Classification is part of the intake process and each inmate’s classification should be reassessed on a routine basis.
