Bexar County Detention Deputy Prevents Detainee’s Suicide, Marking 2nd Suicide Attempt in 6 Days
The above heading was the essence of a headline in the news in September 2020. A detention deputy was conducting face-to-face observations of detainees, which are required by minimum jail standards at certain intervals. He observed that a 35-year-old detainee was attempting to commit suicide. The story didn’t provide further details, but the detainee was likely attempting suicide by hanging. Approximately 93% or more of the suicides that occur in Texas jails each year are carried out by hanging.
The deputy went into the inmate’s cell and immediately began performing life-saving measures. Other deputies and staff arrived to assist in the response. The detainee was taken to University Hospital for further treatment, and the hospital reported to the jail that he was in stable condition.
Six days prior to that, another inmate attempted suicide at the same facility, and he was also prevented from carrying out his suicide attempt. He was taken to University Hospital, and they had reported that he was in stable condition, as well.
