The custodial death report (CDR) about the November 30, 2022, death of 38-year-old Kenderick Jackson provides a summarization of how his death occurred. It indicates that when Mr. Jackson was brought into Euless County Jail in Euless, Texas, he was not booked immediately due to his level of intoxication. He was placed in a single occupancy cell and checked on presumably per guidelines in minimum jail standards. During one of the checks, he was discovered to be unresponsive.
Tarrant County Jail Addresses Jail Overcrowding
The Tarrant County Sheriff in Fort Worth, Texas, informed the Tarrant County commissioner’s court earlier this year that he was desperate for additional jail beds due to overcrowding. The sheriff presented a plan that involved moving 600 or more inmates to a correctional facility in Garza County from Tarrant County and Harris County. He indicated that if the $18 million contract is denied, determining what to do with the excess of inmates is vital. He suggested that the situation could quickly become fairly serious.
One of the key factors creating overcrowding is the fact that many of the inmates are state prisoners.
When these discussions took place in late summer 2022, recent inmate deaths at Tarrant County Jail were heightening concerns about jail conditions. In addition, the sheriff mentioned that priority also should be given to finding beds for inmates in need of mental healthcare.
