Jail Overcrowding Can Result in Noncompliance with Minimum Jail Standards
Following annual jail inspections or special jail inspections, Texas jails are sometimes listed as non-compliant in connection with jail overcrowding. This year, those jails included Harris County Jail, Leon County Jail in Centerville, Texas, and Nacogdoches County Jail in Nacogdoches, Texas.
- Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas, was cited by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) with noncompliance in a September 7, 2022, jail inspection report. It was found that 64 inmates remained in holding cells beyond the 48 hours maximum.
- In a jail inspection report issued on July 12, 2022, TCJS cited Leon County Jail for noncompliance related to jail overcrowding. For instance, in area H, 9 inmates were found to have been housed in a cell with an occupancy limit of 8.
- Nacogdoches County Jail allegedly exceeded its housing capacity on three dates in January 2022.
