Stage Three – Septic Shock
Severe sepsis, which is stage two of sepsis, can lead to septic shock if appropriate treatment is not provided. Septic shock is a deadly condition, and it is imperative for symptoms to be recognized as quickly as possible to prevent unnecessary death.
The apparent symptoms of septic shock are very similar to those you might see when someone is experiencing severe sepsis. However, septic shock may also include a significant drop in blood pressure. When a person’s blood pressure drops so dramatically, potential results include a stroke, heart failure, respiratory failure, the failure of other organs, and death.
Any person who develops sepsis is at risk for advancing to septic shock if treatment is not provided. Any person with an infection in their body has within themselves a catalyst that could develop into sepsis. Any viral, fungal, or bacterial infection can lead to sepsis. The most common conditions from which sepsis originates include pneumonia and other lung infections, digestive system infections, abdominal infections, reproductive system infections, and urinary tract infections.
