A Female Taylor County Jail Inmate in Abilene TX Dies on Day 10-Pt.3

Sixty-three-year-old Tammy Jo Sanders was housed in a multiple-occupancy cell in Taylor County Jail when she was discovered unresponsive at 7:34 AM on November 16, 2022. Officers and medical staff at the Abilene, Texas, jail applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation and an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive her.

Taylor County Jail is Cited for Non-Compliance

The following are specifics on the alleged violation of a minimum jail standard by Taylor County Jail, per the March 14, 2019, special inspection report:

  • Written documentation received and reviewed by the Commission showed that 30-minute face-to-face observations of inmates were completed according to minimum jail standards. However, when checked against video evidence, it was found that on two occasions, the observations were not conducted as notated on the written sheets and as required by medical personnel.

A Taylor County Jail Inmate Dies in Custody on 5/3/2018

Clifton Bradley Curtis entered Taylor County Jail on April 24, 2018. Medications that Mr. Curtis arrived with began to be administered to him beginning at 8 AM the following day. The medical staff gave him Ensure and weighed him, noting that he weighed 122 pounds. The medical staff placed him on a special diet because his weight quickly dropped to 112 pounds.
