A Jefferson County Jail Inmate Dies 14 Days After Arrival-Pt.3
A custodial death report (CDR) about 62-year-old Duane Audwin Durley was prepared by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Beaumont, Texas, and sent to the Texas Office of the Attorney General. The CDR shows that Mr. Durley exhibited medical problems at the time of his intake on October 29, 2022. The summary of his November 12, 2022, death doesn’t mention treatment for his condition while at the jail, but another portion of the CDR reflects that he did receive treatment for the medical condition that caused his death after he was booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.

Anthony Wayne Gray was admitted into Baptist Hospital on May 8, 2021, and, by end of the day, was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Hospital records show that at approximately 8:15 PM on the following day, Mr. Gray suffered severe medical distress, possibly cardiac arrest. Dr. Choi, the attending physician, pronounced Mr. Gray deceased at 8:28 PM.
An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Ben Collins, and the Texas Rangers were assigned as the investigation agency. The results of the autopsy showed that Mr. Gray died of natural causes and, more specifically, his cause of death was Atherosclerotic and Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease with Congestive Heart Failure. Contributing factors included obesity, diabetes mellitus, and pulmonary emphysema.
