A Johnson County, Texas, Jail Inmate Dies from Health Problems – Pt. 3
Fredrick Lynn Jarmon died at a hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, on March 19, 2020, after being incarcerated at Johnson County Jail in Cleburne, Texas. He was 46 years old at the time of his death, and health issues were the cause.
Johnson County Jail has a responsibility to maintain minimum jail standards, which include reasonable and appropriate medical care for inmates. When inmates die in Texas jails, The Texas Rangers usually investigate, along with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS). These investigations seek answers surrounding the death of inmates, including the level of health care provided during incarceration.
A great deal of controversy surrounds the use of third-party health care providers for jails. Statistics show that the quality of medical care inmates receive is greatly diminished after the switch to a third-party provider. On numerous occasions, virtually all of these medical care providers have been accused of placing profits above the welfare of inmates. As an example, there have been reports in U.S. jails of inmates loudly crying out for medical assistance for hours and being completely ignored by jailers. Some have died, having never received the needed medical attention.
Other problems with medical care in jails are related to the lack of distribution of prescribed medications, and there have been countless complaints about medical care neglect depriving inmates of their health and well-being.
