On Monday, September 4, 2017, in Columbus, Georgia, a man with alleged warrants in Texas was allegedly shot by police on a domestic disturbance call. Officers went to a home on Ramsey Drive just before 4 pm, according to Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren. They were responding to a domestic violence call. When the police were at the address, they allegedly got into a scuffle with 52-year-old James Fuller. The fight started when police made the discovery that Fuller was wanted on felony methamphetamine charges in Texas, and they were attempting to arrest him. A Taser was used, but Fuller was not subdued. He continued fighting and allegedly struck a police officer with a chair. Fuller then allegedly reached into a box, seemingly for a gun, and it was then that a police officer fired one round, striking the suspect. Fuller was transported to a nearby emergency room, where he died from the gunshot wound.

Police said that when they first got to the home, the woman was taken outside and placed in a police cruiser, for reasons that were not disclosed. Fuller was in the house with the police officers. The officers put his name through the national crime computer, and the outstanding Texas warrant came up. That’s when the struggle ensued that ended in the alleged fatal police shooting.

Police officers are being held more accountable than ever, which is hopefully reducing incidents of excessive force. At some point, if the police officers wore body cameras during this incident, the details of what happened could be made public. Even when videos are available, however, it is not always understood that actions police officers take are according to standard policy. Though officers may not be at fault, due to operating according to training procedures, needed policy changes can become a focal point.
