A Motorist in Lancaster, Texas, is Allegedly Shot and Killed by an Officer After Hitting and Dragging the Officer with his SUV
On Sunday night, March 18, 2018, in Lancaster, Texas, a motorist who officers attempted to pull over for a traffic stop instead drove toward officers in reverse and then forward in drive. When the vehicle was in reverse, the officers were able to avoid being hit. When pulling forward, the suspect’s vehicle struck and dragged a police officer. The officer who was struck fired his weapon at the vehicle, and the driver was hit, lost control of his vehicle, and crashed into a power pole. The crash flipped his vehicle upside down. After breaking out a window, the officers pulled the man from his car and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officer struck and dragged by the suspect’s vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital in stable condition the following day.
It is standard procedure for officers engaged in a shooting to be on administrative leave during the investigation. The Texas Rangers and the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating the alleged police-involved shooting. No further details about the crash have been released.
There was no mention as to whether a police cruiser dashcam caught the incident on video. Also, there has been no mention of body cameras and whether they captured the deadly encounter.
The driver had been pulled over in the 1500 block of Dewberry Boulevard for a traffic stop when the above-described events unfolded. An investigation will seek to determine, among other things, whether alleged shots fired by an officer were reasonable actions.
