Juan Carlos Guerrero Commits Suicide in Bexar County Jail, San Antonio, Texas
Suicide is a leading cause of death in county and municipal jails, and jails are required to engage in suicide prevention measures. When Juan Carlos Guerrero, went through intake at Bexar County Jail on October 4, 2022, his date of birth, the intake officer noted that no suicidal statements were made, and he did not exhibit mental health problems. Mr. Guerrero was 44 years old, and the custodial death report (CDR) about his passing does not specify the type of cell he was placed in at the San Antonio, Texas jail. It does state that his assigned cell was BE28, which was likely a single occupancy cell.
On November 2, 2022, at about 3:30 AM, an officer found that Mr. Guerrero had a sheet tied around his neck and he was hanging from the top bunk, where the other end of the sheet had been secured. He was in his assigned cell, and the deputy called for assistance and then he held Mr. Guerrero up by the arm to relieve pressure from his neck. Upon the arrival of another officer, a rescue cutting tool was used to cut the sheet from Mr. Guerrero’s neck. A deputy then checked for a pulse, but no pulse was found.
Lifesaving measures were initiated and Mr. Guerrero was transported by ambulance to Downtown Baptist Emergency Room, where he was pronounced deceased by a physician at 7:43 PM.
