The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is Supplied with Much-Needed Narcan® (Naloxone)
The UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing recently gave 96 doses of Narcan® to Sheriff Javier Salazar of Bexar County in San Antonio, Texas. There is an escalating opioid crisis across the U.S., and Narcan (naxalone) is a lifesaving nasal spray that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. Since 2018, more than 600,000 doses of Narcan have been distributed to Texas first responders through The School of Nursing.
Sheriff Salazar said that the Narcan they were supplied with on October 27, 2022, would be distributed among patrol deputies immediately. He said that their stores of Narcan were practically depleted, which led him to make phone calls and gain help from the nursing school. He also said that the school has previously supplied the county with Narcan for use in local San Antonio jails.
Fentanyl, heroin, morphine, codeine, methadone, and hydrocodone, are examples of opioids, many of which are prescription medications. Oftentimes, individuals who are booked into jails have drugs such as opioids in their system. Inmates who are placed in detox often die within a short span of time due to the effects of drugs. “Withdrawal deaths” are a concern because there are many claims in the U.S. that jails failed to provide deceased inmates with the medical help they needed.
In this continuing series, learn more about fentanyl, a deadly opioid that state officials say has been coming across the border in catastrophic quantities.
