A Nueces County Jail Detainee Dies on 4/13/23-Pt.5
Continuing with events surrounding the death of Charles Benedict, who was detained in Nueces County Jail in Corpus Christi, Texas, the next thing that happened on April 9, 2023, was that medics arrived at the jail. Mr. Benedict was secured into an automated CPR chest compression machine by Medics Hartnett, Hernandez, Magellan, Brunemier, and Gonzalez and transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital. On April 13, 2023, Mr. Benedict, age 53, was removed from life support at 3:38 PM and his time of death was 3:48 PM the same day.

Rule §275.1-Regular Observation by Jailers
Nueces County Jail was also cited for failing to comply with Rule §275.1-Regular Observation by Jailers, which is in the chapter on the Supervision of Inmates. The portion of this rule that pertains to the Nueces County Jail’s violation of minimum jail standards follows: There shall be a two-way voice communication capability between inmates and jailers, licensed peace officers, bailiffs, and designated staff at all times.
The inspector’s notes included on the jail inspection report dated June 21-23, 2022, follow:
- 39 inmate beds are out of commission due to broken intercoms. This issue directly relates to overcrowding issues in intake.
