A Detainee at Nueces County Jail Dies on 4/13/2023

Charles Benedict was incarcerated at Nueces County Jail in Corpus Christi, Texas, from March 29, 2023, to the day of his death on April 13, 2023. He was arrested for harassment of a public servant. The cause of his death is unknown and pending the results of an autopsy. The custodial death report (CDR) that was filed with the Office of the Attorney General provides no details indicating that Mr. Benedict had a medical condition.

The summary of how Mr. Benedict’s death occurred simply says that he was discovered lying face down on his bunk and did not respond to the unit officer. Emergency medical services were called, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) machine was administered to Mr. Benedict. Nursing staff began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), also referred to as chest compressions.
