A Nueces County Jail Detainee Dies on 7/24/23-Pt.5

Texas Surratt had been a detainee in the custody of Nueces County Jail in Corpus Christi, Texas, when he died on July 24, 2023. Continuing details from the custodial death report (CDR) about the events surrounding Mr. Surratt’s death follow: Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at the jail at about 10:33 a.m., and they took charge of the scene. Mr. Surratt was assessed and administered aid, and then he was placed onto a stretcher. He was loaded into the awaiting ambulance, which departed from Nueces County Jail at about 10:51 a.m. Mr. Surrat was taken to the Emergency Room at Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital. Shortly after his arrival, at 11:08 a.m. Mr. Surratt was pronounced deceased. The cause of death is unknown and pending autopsy results.

Juan Caros Cantu Dies 1 Week After Booking at Nueces County Jail

Juan Caros Cantu, age 36, was booked into Nueces County Jail in Corpus Christi, Texas on September 7, 2022.  Tragically, he was pronounced deceased on September 14, 2022, just a week later. He was discovered unresponsive in his cell that day. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was never revived. His cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy. The custodial death report (CDR) has never been amended to reflect the findings of the autopsy.
