What is Peritonitis?

Peritonitis is a condition in which the lining of the abdomen becomes inflamed. The parts of the body affected are between the chest and the pelvis. The condition is caused by a fungal or bacterial infection. There are two types of peritonitis, as follows:

  • Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is an infection caused by bacteria. This type of peritonitis occurs when an individual has a liver disease, such as kidney disease or cirrhosis.
  • Secondary peritonitis can occur as a result of a hole or rupture inside of an organ in the abdomen or other health problems.

It is critical for a person to get treatment for peritonitis quickly. With rapid treatment, medical professionals can clear out the infection and treat any other health conditions that may be causing it. Antibiotics are usually used to treat peritonitis. Without treatment, a serious infection could spread throughout the body and result in death.
