A Smith County Jail Inmate Dies of Unknown Causes on 2/18/22-Pt3

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office filed a custodial death report (CDR) on Torry Lamont Newman on March 11, 2022. Mr. Newman was 46 years old when he died in the custody of the Tyler, Texas, jail on February 18, 2022. His cause of death is unknown and pending autopsy results.

Recent County Jail Inmate Deaths Outside of Texas

Custodial deaths in county jails happen frequently in the U.S. In today’s news, a 39-year-old woman in a jail outside Texas was discovered unresponsive in her cell. She was pronounced dead later that day, which was March 20, 2022. The death is under investigation. In a statement by the state’s bureau of investigation, it was revealed that the presumed cause of death was not released.

The death of a 32-year-old inmate was announced on the news on February 11, 2022. It was the third recent inmate death in that immediate area outside Texas. One of these was a 65-year-old man who died after showing signs of respiratory distress. In addition, a 37-year-old county jail inmate was moved to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No further information has been provided about the causes of these deaths.

In November 2021, information about the tragic death of a 21-year-old who was serving a 30-day sentence was published. The family claims that the death was a suicide, but no official cause of death had been released at that time.
