A Stun Gun was Allegedly used on the Nueces County Jail, Corpus Christi, Prisoner who Died March 5, 2018
Twenty-seven-year-old Daniel Carrillo died on March 5, 2018, after three weeks of incarceration at Nueces County Jail in Corpus Christi, Texas. New details have emerged about events preceding his death. Department of Public Safety Sgt. Nathan Brandley said that at about 3:00 on the morning of Carrillo’s death, he had allegedly caused a disturbance in the jail. Brandley said the prisoner wanted to fight with officers. Jail staff members were attempting to get him under control, as Carrillo continued fighting and screaming. Finally, an electronic weapon was deployed, to stun Carrillo. Shortly after, Carrillo was discovered unresponsive. Emergency medical services were contacted, and the prisoner was quickly transported by ambulance to Spohn Shoreline Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. As yet, there has been no report of a ruling on the cause of death by the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office. The custodial death is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
The use of electronic weapons by law enforcement officials is sometimes associated with fatalities. In January 2018 news, the family of Manuel Delacruz filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Port Arthur Police Department, several individuals, and the Medical Center of Southeast Texas regarding 26-year-old Delacruz’s death. They claim, among other things, that an electronic weapon was repeatedly used on Delacruz and that he died during that encounter. Among the family’s claims is that officers using electronic weapons that day did not have adequate training. The Jefferson County District Attorney brought the case before a grand jury, and none of the police officers were indicted.
