A Suspect is Allegedly Shot and Killed by a Deputy in Kingwood, a Houston, Texas, Suburb
On Monday, October 16, 2017, in Kingwood, Texas, a deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department allegedly shot and killed a suspect. The incident is being investigated by the Houston Police Department. Details of what allegedly happened follow.
According to authorities, the events leading to the alleged fatal police shooting began at about 1:30 p.m. on Kingwood Drive not far from Chestnut Ridge Road. A Montgomery County deputy stopped the driver of a motorcycle at the intersection of Loop 494 and Kingwood Drive. The stop was made because the deputy ran the license plate on the bike, and it showed up as invalid. The driver of the motorcycle took off, rather than comply; and the deputy lost the motorcycle during pursuit.
Another deputy constable identified the motorcycle and began following it. Authorities say the motorcyclist got into an auto accident and then ran to a gas station nearby. He then allegedly tried to commit a carjacking. The deputy arrived at the scene of the would-be carjacking and attempted to subdue the suspect.
The deputy deployed his stun gun, but it reportedly had no effect on the man. The suspect then allegedly grabbed for his backpack and pulled out a handgun. The deputy allegedly shot the suspect several times at about 1:40 p.m. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the initial reporting, there was no mention of body cameras used by the officers involved. In many police stations across the U.S., body cameras are now standard equipment. This new procedure is an answer to widespread outrage over a few high-profile cases that have suggested that police engaged in misconduct of some kind. There are groups claiming that police officers are often involved in racial targeting, which is one aspect of the overall demand for more police accountability.
