23 Texas Inmates Have Died of Unknown Causes Since the June 2023 Heat Wave

Since a news source reported that at least nine Texas inmates in uncooled cells had died of cardiac events such as heart attacks, another 14 have died in the extreme heat of unknown causes. Many were found unresponsive in their cells, which are un-air-conditioned in 100º F+ degree weather.

Prison rights advocates, families of inmates, and former prisoners gathered at the state Capitol this week begging Texas officials to approve the installation of air conditioners in state lockups. They demanded a special legislative session be called immediately for the purpose of providing relief to inmates in this brutal heatwave.

Former inmates supported the parent of a recently deceased inmate who said they are cooking people alive in this heatwave.

One legislator added his voice to the struggle, saying that it is a humanity issue and not a matter of politics.

In this ongoing series, learn about more speculations concerning heat-related deaths in jails.

One of the purposes of this website is to provide resources is to help Texas inmates who have been incarcerated in local county and municipal jails in the state. There is never an intention of implicating an individual or institution in connection with misdeeds.
