A Now-Deceased Inmate was Allegedly Denied Medical Care
A county jail outside Texas is currently in the spotlight for allegedly denying a 48-year-old man medical care. The man died in April 2022 after suffering a perforated duodenal ulcer. This is a treatable condition, but the jail’s medical staff failed to diagnose or treat the condition. For hours, he complained about nausea and stomach pain. Nothing was given by the staff to treat the condition other than mild painkillers, although the inmate was unable to walk and was obviously in extreme pain for hours leading up to his death.
The jail’s medical provider is a third-party entity that the county made a contract with to provide inmates with needed care. Multiple complaints have been made about medical neglect at the jail. Headlines about that county suggest that the jail has ping-ponged from one troubled healthcare provider to another.
Next in this ongoing series, learn about the escalation of medical conditions such as the one named above and the deadly results when no treatment is provided.
