A duodenal ulcer can be diagnosed if a person has some of the following signs and symptoms, and some distinguish it from a gastric ulcer:
- Stomach pain. Abdominal pain, either dull or sharp, will present under the sternum. It is easy to distinguish between a gastric ulcer and a duodenal ulcer because, with gastric ulcers, pain tends to subside after eating. Once the stomach is empty, the pain returns. The pain usually occurs during the night and will often wake a person up.
- Nausea. Nausea is not a typical symptom of gastric ulcers, but it is rather common among people who suffer from a duodenal ulcer. This type of nausea is a natural response to pain. Eating may curb feelings of nausea.
- Fatigue. A rare symptom of duodenal ulcers is fatigue. This is generally caused by the body being unable to absorb the nutrients. If an ulcer has perforated and is bleeding, anemia may occur, which also causes fatigue.
