An Inmate in a Texas County Jail Dies of Diabetic Ketoacidosis
A man not yet 30 years old died in 2022 of diabetic ketoacidosis in a Texas county jail. When the young man arrived at the jail, he brought all the diabetic supplies he would need, but it wasn’t administered to him. He had turned himself in to face a DWI charge. Five days later, he was found unresponsive in his cell and was never revived.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a deadly condition that occurs when a diabetic doesn’t have enough insulin. When a person is in jail, it is reasonable to expect that he or she will not die of something that is treatable, especially when the person brought what was necessary with them. It was discovered that the medications provided at intake did not go through a process that made the insulin available to the inmate in the case mentioned above.
Medical neglect is not something jails seem to be held accountable for. Jails are subject to annual inspections. One of the things required is that prescriptions are properly administered, but little else is monitored in a way that would reveal a lack of medical care.
