According to a watchdog group in Texas, the family members of mentally ill inmates can submit a formal request that their loved ones receive screening for placement in a mental health unit.
The watchdog group also reports that one young man who had been arrested and allegedly beaten up in a Texas jail was fortunate enough to be released. The young man was declared insane, criminal charges were dismissed, and he was placed in a medical facility for long-term care.
