A woman claims that her screaming during labor was ignored for hours before she prematurely gave birth to a baby boy alone in her cell in the Ellis County Jail in Waxahachie, Texas. Several female inmates have expressed a desire to report that they heard Shaye Bear screaming throughout two nights before the birth, but they say they are afraid to file a grievance. Bear and her baby were taken to Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Waxahachie. The baby, who has been named Cashh, was then taken by medical helicopter to Cook’s Children Medical Center in Fort Worth, where he is in critical condition. Bear’s claims about the jailers’ responses to her ordeal in the hours leading up to the birth and afterward are nothing short of shocking.

The morning Bear gave birth, May 17, 2018, she saw a doctor, who reportedly thought she had an infection but saw that she was not dilated, according to Bear. That afternoon, Bear spoke to a judge at a bail reduction hearing and said she was experiencing contractions and was in pain. She asked to go to an emergency room, but her request was denied.

Bear says the Ellis County District Attorney asked that she remain incarcerated probably because of her history of drug use. She was placed that day in a single cell so that jailers would check on her more frequently. Jailers told her they thought she was faking contractions. They allegedly ignored hours of screams and pleas for help, as Bear says her contractions intensified.

Then Bear’s water broke, and the baby flew out of her onto a mat on the next contraction, she said. This was her third child, and she knew fluid needed to be removed from the infant’s nose and mouth. She sucked it out with her mouth. She then crawled to the door and begged for help. There was no response until she pressed for assistance a second time, and then it was still a long wait.

Bear claims that as she was holding her baby, a jailer asked her if she had reached in and pulled the baby out.

Investigators believe Bear induced herself to give birth, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the incident.

Online video is available, showing the mother at the jail telling her story of Cashh’s birth. She asks for prayers for her son.

The Texas Rangers are investigating Bear’s claims. The only comment given by Ellis County jail was to defend the medical care Bear has received for her pregnancy while at the jail.
