An El Paso County Inmate Apparently Commits Suicide on 5/29/22-Pt3

On May 10, 2022, 39-year-old Andres Linares Baca entered the El Paso County Jail located in downtown El Paso. The custodial death report (CDR) prepared by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office shows that Mr. Baca‘s means of death was hanging/strangulation. He was found unresponsive on May 29, 2022, and was pronounced dead on the same day. The cause of death is listed as pending autopsy results.

Robert John Barela Commits Suicide in the El Paso County Jail on 2/23/22

Robert John Barela entered El Paso County Jail on February 10, 2022. He was pronounced dead 13 days later on February 23, 2022. The cause of death of 37-year-old Robert John Barela is listed as suicide in the custodial death report sent to the Office of Attorney General about his death. The means of death was hanging or strangulation.

According to information recorded during intake screening, Mr. Barela neither made suicidal statements nor exhibited any mental health problems. He was housed in a single cell. The summary of the incident resulting in his death shows that officers were conducting a security check when they saw him hanging from the ceiling. Mr. Barela had used a bedsheet to hang himself. Officers administered first aid as soon as he was lowered. Mr. Barela was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
