An Inmate Outside Texas Dies 4 Hours After Arrival

On Thursday night, April 7, 2022, at about 9:40 pm, a man was booked into a county jail outside Texas. The police department’s press release indicated that the man had been processed into the facility and evaluated before being placed in a holding cell. During a Wellness check about four hours later, a correctional officer saw that the inmate was experiencing medical distress. Shortly thereafter, he became unresponsive. Medical staff and correctional staff engaged in efforts to resuscitate the inmate.

The inmate was transported to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead early on the morning of April 8, 2022, four hours after being booked into the jail. The cause of death is unknown and pending the results of an autopsy.

The scenario described above that happened last month outside of Texas is very similar to custodial deaths that have occurred in Texas this year.
