An Inmate Housed in a Detox Cell in Tarrant County Jail Dies
On March 18, 2023, Heidiann Renee Gitts was booked into Tarrant County Jail at noon. Tragically, she died in the jail less than 57 hours later, and the medical cause of death is listed as cardiac arrest. The address of the Tarrant County Jail is 100 N Lamar, Fort Worth, TX 76102. She was housed in cell 63D, which was a detoxification cell. Her death occurred at John Peter Smith Hospital. Ms. Gitts was only 32 years old when she died.
Inmate Deaths in Tarrant County Jail
The Tarrant County Jail is comprised of five facilities and has a capacity of approximately 5,000 inmates. The Sheriff’s Office Detention Bureau is at 100 N. Lamar, Fort Worth, Texas, 76196. The Tarrant County Lon Evans Corrections Center has a 444-bed capacity. It is a minimum-security facility located at 600 West Weatherford, Fort Worth, TX, 76102.
A Dallas newspaper headlined in late 2021 that 21 individuals died in the custody of Tarrant County Jail in 2020. For perspective, Dallas County had 8 custodial deaths in the same time period. They suggested that, for context, another county in the state fired 7 members of jail staff after one controversial death in their county jail.
