An Inmate in Austin TX Dies After being Found Hallucinating

Jared John Bell Commits Suicide in Travis County Jail
Thirty-two-year-old Jared Jon Bell was booked into Travis County Jail at 11:27 PM on February 7, 2022. The address of the jail is 500 West 10th Street, Austin TX 78701. During the booking process, the custodial death report (CDR) indicates that Mr. Bell made suicidal statements and exhibited mental health problems. Instead of yes or no answers, “unknown” is the response to whether Mr. Bell appeared to be intoxicated by drugs or alcohol and whether he exhibited medical problems during intake.
Mr. Bell was housed in the Ida unit at the jail, where the phone was apparently inoperable. For that reason, Mr. Bell was placed in the dayroom of the King unit at approximately 9:19 AM on February 9, 2022; and he was left alone there. A jailer found at 10:13 AM that Mr. Bell had wrapped the phone cord around his neck and used it to hang himself in a sitting position. Lifesaving measures were initiated immediately, but he was declared deceased by Dr. Abraham at 11:07 AM, about 36 hours after his arrival at the jail.
