Drug Withdrawal
Drug withdrawal is a physiological response to sudden slowing or quitting of the use of an addictive substance. Withdrawal syndromes can involve many different combinations of mental, physical, and emotional symptoms. If left unmanaged, drug withdrawal can be severe and sometimes deadly. The decline or sudden absence of a given substance in an addicted person’s blood concentration inevitably produces withdrawal symptoms.
While in the process of ridding itself of any lingering chemical influence of an addictive drug, the body, during withdrawal, tries to reach a new state of stable equilibrium or homeostatis. Significant physical and mental health repercussions can occur and may be accompanied by temporary disruptions in brain chemistry.
Delirium tremens is a syndrome that is sometimes associated with severe alcohol withdrawal. It is important for delirium tremens to be properly treated; otherwise, the individual could begin experiencing severe, potentially deadly seizures. Delirium tremens is fatal in approximately 15% of those who suffer alcohol withdrawal without treatment.
