Continuation of A Woman’s Experiences of Drug Withdrawals in a County Texas Jail
The heroin-addicted woman who was not given access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in a Texas county jail provided details of her experience after withdrawal symptoms started, as follows:
- Three days after her arrest, she said that she was barely able to get through her appearance before a judge without vomiting. The bile bubbling up in her throat had her setting her jaw very hard in order not to puke during her arraignment. She said she walked unsteadily into the hearing room, her body aching and trembling.
- After appearing before the magistrate, she was taken to another building and was escorted between concrete pods during booking processes. The medical exam was last, and during that time she said she felt as though her entire body was an aching bruise. The blood pressure cuff had a choking effect on her sweaty arm studded with tracks. At that point, she was questioned as to whether she was experiencing drug withdrawals. She ardently responded that, yes, she was, and hoped for medical relief of some kind. That, however, did not happen and things only got worse.
