In news out of Utah, officials say that an inmate in Weber County Jail experienced a medical emergency in their cell in the jail’s medical area at approximately 8:45 p.m. on August 29, 2025. Weber County deputies and medical personnel immediately began lifesaving measures. Emergency medical services (EMS) were called to the scene. Lifesaving measures continued until the detainee was transported to a local hospital. In the hospital, though in the jail’s custody, the inmate was pronounced deceased on August 30, 2025. The sheriff’s office provided no further information except to say that the inmate had been in the jail for a brief duration.

The name of the deceased has not been made public, and no further details about what happened are being released at this time. The WCSO stated in a press release that occurrences such as these are difficult for everyone involved. They will strive to provide resources for all those affected by the incident. They asked for patience as the custodial death is thoroughly investigated. The exact nature of the inmate’s death has not been released.
The WCSO also expressed gratitude to the deputies, medical personnel, and EMS personnel who provided care for the individual. The County Sheriff also acknowledged staff members in other areas of the facility and thanked them for ensuring a continuation of services for the other inmates detained at the Weber County Jail.

Utah Has Seen a Significant Number of Custodial Deaths
Studies on deaths that have occurred in Utah jails have revealed several key points, as follows:
- According to a 2020 report, the leading cause of death in Utah county jails is suicide. (In the entire nation overall, jail suicides are the number one cause of inmate deaths.)
- About half of the deaths in Utah jails occur within 14 days of the inmate’s incarceration.
- The majority of the detainees who die in Utah jails had not been found guilty of any crimes.
These statistics suggest that Weber County faces similar problems. In addition, the jail system in Utah may provide insufficient safety protocols and mental health care.
Two Custodial Deaths in Maine’s Somerset County Jail are Allegedly Wrongful Deaths
Somerset County in Maine is currently facing scrutiny regarding the deaths of inmates Virgil White and Mitchell Watson. In both cases, families seek justice because of alleged failure to supervise and train personnel and an alleged indifference among some jail staff to the medical needs of detainees.
Virgil White and Mitchell Watson Died in a Maine County Jail
Deaths in Maine jails are frequently the result of suicide or withdrawal symptoms. Virgil White, 33, died by suicide in Somerset County jail on December 5, 2022. Jail staff received a report that Mr. White had mental health issues. Just before being booked into the jail, he had returned from Riverview Psychiatric Center, where he received treatment.
In cases where an inmate has mental problems, it is important to provide frequent, adequate safety checks and adequate mental health treatment. The family alleges that their loved one was a victim of gross inadequacy during his incarceration.
Mitchell Watson, 35, died on February 6, 2023, during incarceration in Somerset County Jail, Maine. His family alleges that their loved one was suffering symptoms of drug exposure and the jail officials exhibited deliberate indifference toward him, resulting in his death.
The address of Somerset County Jail is 131 E Madison Rd, Madison, Maine 04950. The jail’s rated capacity is 234 detainees.
