Liberty County Jail Fails Another Inspection After a 36-Year-Old Inmate Commits Suicide
Liberty County Jail failed two inspections in 2019 before the tragic suicide of 36-year-old Cristian David Sarmiento, who died on September 12 of that year. Mr. Sarmiento had been booked into the Liberty, Texas, jail on August 4, 2019. He was housed in a multiple-occupancy cell.
In the custodial death report about Mr. Sarmiento’s passing, there is an indication that intake procedures were incomplete. Instead of yes or no answers to questions about how he appeared during intake, the responses are “unknown.” So, it was unknown whether he made suicidal statements, exhibited mental or medical health problems, or appeared intoxicated, whether on alcohol or drugs.
Tragically, on the day of his death, Mr. Sarmiento was discovered hanging by his neck from a bed sheet. He was pronounced deceased after being transported to the Liberty-Dayton Hospital. CPR had begun in the jail and continued until that time.
In the next segment, learn about the minimum jail standard that Liberty County Jail was cited for in a special jail inspection report dated September 25, 2019.
