Are Inmates in Texas Protected from Medical Neglect?-Pt.6
The family of a man who died on May 16, 2023–and was the sixth inmate to die at a particular county jail in Texas–has been speaking out. The family has discovered new alleged details about their loved one’s stay. The man had gone through intake on May 13, 2023, and he died on his fourth day of incarceration. There was a note on the custodial death report (CDR) about his death indicating that he exhibited medical problems.
The following allegations have emerged in connection with the 32-year-old inmate’s death:
- He was observed foaming at the mouth
- He experienced periods of unconsciousness with no medical response
- He reportedly vomited excessively before his death
Some of the man’s fellow inmates say that 90 minutes passed before he received any assistance for the above symptoms.
Equally disturbing is that the jailers laughed at him, taunted him, told him nothing was wrong with him, and cursed him out, according to several inmates.
The CDR includes a summary of how the death occurred, and details will follow in the next segment. The results of the autopsy are awaited because the cause of death is currently unknown.
