Bell County, Texas Jail Fails State Inspection

Bell County Jail Found Non-Compliant with Texas Jail Standards
On December 22, 2025, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) issued a Notice of Non-Compliance to Bell County Jail in Belton, Texas. The notice stems from a special inspection conducted in December 2025 revealing serious failures in how the jail administered prescribed medications — a vital part of jail detainee health care. The TCJS found that Bell County Jail violated Minimum Jail Standard §273(7) by failing to dispense prescribed medications to inmates in accordance with a physician’s written instructions. The report shows that:
-
Medication was not dispensed 112 out of 127 times between September 21 and November 24, 2025.
-
This repeated failure to deliver prescribed medicine raises concerns about the jail’s procedures for medication management and inmate health care.
Under Texas law, every county jail must provide constitutionally adequate medical care to detainees and must administer medications as prescribed. Failure to do so violates both state jail standards and the constitutional rights of pretrial detainees.
