On Monday, July 31, 2017, at about 3:15 p.m., correctional officers at the Lake County Jail in Waukegan, Illinois, discovered an inmate attempting to commit suicide using a t-shirt. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying that the 39-year-old inmate is in a maximum security unit of the jail, and officers were able to stop the suicide attempt. This was the second prevented suicide in Lake County within a month.
In Monday’s incident, two correctional officers were making rounds when they saw the inmate trying to hang himself. The entered the inmate’s cell without hesitation and removed the shirt from his neck using a cutting tool. The inmate’s breathing resumed and he regained consciousness. Medical personnel at the jail provided treatment, and then the inmate was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. He was later released back into custody. Upon his return, a suicide prevention protocol was initiated. Sheriff Mark Curran gave the officers credit for saving the man’s life, since he was possibly moments from dying.
On July 11 at about noon, an 18-year-old was discovered trying to commit suicide with a bed sheet, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s office. As corrections officers were making their rounds in the Segregation Unit of the Cook County Jail, they made the discovery. The two officers immediately went into the jail cell and took the sheet off of the inmate’s neck. The teen was examined by a medical team from the jail, and they found that he was uninjured.
Inmate suicides are a major concern. Staff members at jails have a duty to protect inmates from harm, whether inflicted by themselves or others.
