Cass County, Texas Jail Listed as Non-Compliant by State

Inside The Old Idaho State Penitentiary

The Cass County jail, in Linden, Texas, recently failed an evaluation or analysis by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS). The Cass County jail is thus now listed as being non-compliant by the TCJS.

After reviewing video documentation from an August 29, 2022 escape, the TCJS inspector found that a vestibule door was left unsecured. When a jailer opened the cell block door, the inmate assaulted the jailer and exited the vestibule, securing the door behind him. The inmate then ran down a hallway to the housing area and was able to gain access to the booking area through an unsecured door. Once in the booking area, the inmate was able to gain access to control/dispatch through an unsecured door. The inmate had a shank which he used to threaten three other jail personnel into opening the door in booking and leading to the sallyport. Once the inmate exited the jail into the sallyport, the inmate was able to escape the facility through the sallyport gate which was also unsecured. Jail staff had to provide a corrective plan of action, including training of all jail personnel, regarding the security of doors in the facility as well as sallyport roll-up doors.
