Denial of Medical Care in Jails Can Have Devastating Consequences
If inmates in county and city jails in the U.S. are denied necessary medical care, they sometimes die. This is true among individuals with diabetes who find themselves incarcerated. When medical negligence or abuse occurs and results in death, people within the jail systems can be held accountable.
Providing inmates who have diabetes with insulin is obviously necessary. Denying insulin to those who will die without it is a mistake that inmates with diabetes cannot afford for jails to make. In U.S. jails, a medical evaluation is typically a part of the intake process. There is just no excuse when a lack of insulin results in a deadly case of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is the natural result of the denial of the medication.
Brooke Bailey is Denied Insulin and Dies from Diabetic Ketoacidosis
When Brooke Bailey was booked into Missouri’s Cooper County Jail on October 23, 2023, and in the days afterward, she communicated with members of the jail staff about her need for medical attention. Ms. Bailey was a diabetic and required insulin. She was found deceased in her cell just four days later, on October 27, 2023. Her cause of death was diabetic ketoacidosis with hyponatremia.
Two individuals are allegedly responsible for failing to provide Ms. Bailey with necessary medical care. They also allegedly discouraged other members of the jail staff from assisting her, saying that she was “faking it” when she claimed she had diabetes. Those two individuals have been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The Cooper County Jail’s address is 200 Main Street, Boonville, Missouri 65233. The jail has an inmate capacity of 42.
Louis Jung, Jr., Died from Ketoacidosis in a Philadelphia Jail
Louis Jung, Jr., was booked into Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility (CFCF) in November 2023. As an individual who had Type 1 diabetes, he knew that his life was in the jail’s hands. Despite his needs that would be apparent to anyone aware that he had diabetes, the jail failed to administer insulin to Mr. Jung. Medical officials did not provide glucose monitoring or place him in the infirmary, either.
Mr. Jung was pronounced deceased on November 6, 2023. His life would have been spared simply by administering needed insulin.
The policies and practices of the Philadelphia Department of Prisons (PDP) are notoriously and grossly inadequate. This was proven by the autopsy results of Louis Jung, Jr., in which his cause of death was diabetic ketoacidosis.
The address of Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility is 7901 State Rd., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19136. The bed capacity at CFCF is 1,437.
