Complaints to TCJS about Inmate Medical Care are Common-Pt3

An Inmate Who Committed Suicide was Denied Medical Care

A watchdog group in Texas reveals many of the stories of individuals in county jails who have been denied medical care. For example, in one case, a young man was denied his prescription medications needed in the treatment of mental illness.

The magistrate was not given accurate information about the man’s mental health problems. In addition, he was placed in a single cell, supposedly on suicide watch. Yet, he was provided with items that can be used to commit suicide. Both actions seemingly go against any serious efforts to prevent suicide. Statistics show that leaving a suicidal inmate alone is tantamount to enabling them to commit the act.

In this disturbing case, as if the above-mentioned matters were not bad enough, jailers allegedly taunted him relentlessly with the words “do it,” in reference to threats of suicide. In the end, the young man committed suicide in that jail.

An Inmate Died After Her Health Issues were Ignored

A woman in her 50s was booked into a county jail in Texas and died three days later. Evidence shows that she had repeated episodes of diarrhea, and her condition quickly worsened. She became dehydrated and suffered physical trauma. Other inmates pleaded with jailers on her behalf, asking them to send medical help for her. Allegedly, the help never came.

Implicating persons or organizations in acts of wrongdoing is never intended on this website. Helping inmates now or in times past held in a county jail in Texas is the purpose of the blog posts on this site.
