A 41-Year-Old Inmate Dies of DKA After 10 Days in Jail
An Army veteran had allegedly gotten behind on his child support payments, and he was placed in a county jail outside Texas. When he was booked into the jail, it was noted that he was a diabetic in need of medication. Records show that medical personnel at the jail often failed to ensure that the inmate received his medication. They also failed to monitor his blood sugar. After spending 10 days in the jail, he was found dead on the floor of his cell with traces of vomit on his face as well as the floor. He was wearing an adult diaper. The cause of his death was diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
A 55-Year-Old Man Needing Diabetes Treatment Dies in Jail
A man was placed in a county jail on a probation violation. For most of his life, he had type 2 diabetes. To manage the disease, he took two forms of insulin and an oral drug. The details of his treatment requirements were noted when he was booked into the jail. While he was incarcerated, he only received one of the insulin drugs. After two days of vomiting and falling down repeatedly, he was found unresponsive in his cell. He was pronounced dead later that day.
